Our second PowerHouseGames brought together Lucy’s staff and students with local schoolchildren for a fun day of inclusive sports.

On the 18th of January 2023, Lucy Cavendish College in collaboration with Power2Inspire hosted its second PowerHouseGames. Participants included Lucy Cavendish College staff and students, Power2Inspire volunteers, and teachers and pupils from Littlegarth School, Duxford Primary School, and Churchill Special School.

The event took place once again at the University Sports Centre and began with a welcome address by PowerHouseGames founder, John Willis. The participants rotated through a series of fun games supported by Power2Inspire and Lucy Cavendish staff.

“The positive difference in all the students from the beginning of the games to the end, was so marked,” said enthused Keith Dawes, head of pastoral care at Littlegarth School.

The games included boccia, new age kurling, goalball, sitting volleyball, sitting netball, and football. Everyone was invited to join in. At the end of the event, John handed out certificates and medals to the school children, who said,

“Today we have been doing different sports, not how we usually do them, but experiencing how disabled people would do those sports. I am definitely having fun”.

“I am having a really great time. I woke up this morning not in a really great mood and this has really cheered me up”.

Lucy Cavendish student volunteers shared their thoughts after the event:

“I decided to take part in this year’s PowerHouseGames because it’s so important to have young people, staff, and students from many different backgrounds coming together in an inclusive sports environment, getting out there, making new friends, and also being active”.

“I have come along today to help out at the PowerHouseGames with other Lucy Cavendish staff and students because inclusivity is one of the College’s core values, and to see that being implemented in sports is something really important. It has been a really rewarding day as we got to try new sports with students of all different abilities”.

Lucy Cavendish Student Welfare Advisor, Dr Maria Dias added, “It has been an amazing morning, and it was lovely to hear the sound level going up and up and up in the hall, and see everyone enjoying themselves.”

A huge thank you to everyone involved.
