Lucy students were given an insight into careers in Law

On Monday 20 March, Lucy students were given a special opportunity to visit Middle Temple and Taylor Wessing in London.

The trip was made possible by the generosity of two Lucy alumnae: Geri Peterson (Law, 1993), Master of the Bench at Middle Temple, and Nicole Ng Yuen (Law, 2013), Associate in Commercial Disputes at Taylor Wessing.

The students, which included those studying Law as well as those interested in the field, were accompanied by Lucy's Director of Studies in Law, Dr Poorna Mysoor.

The trip began with lunch in The Garden Room at Middle Temple, which gave students the opportunity to walk around the green outdoor spaces. Middle Temple’s Outreach Officer, Richard Frost, then gave students a tour of the Inn, including Temple Church and the dining hall, detailing its history. He also gave a talk in which he offered advice on scholarship and pupillage applications.

Middle Temple is one of the four Inns of Court exclusively entitled to call their members to the English Bar as barristers.

The students then walked to Taylor Wessing where Nicola Willden (Senior Early Talent Manager at Taylor Wessing) opened the event with a talk on graduate recruitment. Nicole Ng Yuen then hosted a panel discussion with three of her colleagues: Radhika Morally (Associate in Employment), Alice Picton (Associate in Private Equity), and Osama Altikriti (trainee solicitor). Each panellist discussed their roles as well as the journey they took to enter the field of Law. They also offered various pointers to students from networking tips to how to cope with work pressures.

The event ended with a drinks reception in which students were able to network with the panellists as well as a group of Lucy alumnae.

Taylor Wessing is an international law firm with 28 offices internationally. The firm has over 300 partners and over 1,000 lawyers worldwide.

Dr Poorna Mysoor commented:

"What was unique about the day was that it had something for everyone – whether you wanted to explore the Bar route or the solicitor’s route. It offered the students an insider’s view on how to make an application, be it for a scholarship to attend the Bar school or for vacation scheme at a law firm, with guidance on resources and tips on how to make your application stand out."
