Ben studied natural science at Oxford University and medicine in London. He completed his psychiatric training in Cambridge, including a PhD in molecular neurogenetics. He is currently an associate professor in applied and translational old age psychiatry at the University of Cambridge and honorary consultant psychiatrist at Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT).  His research interests span experimental medicine and clinical trials in dementia and the analysis of big data to enhance dementia care. He is research and development director at CPFT and clinical lead for dementia and neurodegeneration in the East of England for the NIHR RRDN
