Four enthralling stories from students across different disciplines scooped £100 prizes.

Writing is central to the College's history and its mission today. Together with the prestigious Lucy Cavendish Fiction Prize, whose winner was announced at tonight’s ceremony (link to article), the College runs several writing prizes for its own students, under its Writing Centre umbrella.

The Lucy Cavendish College Writing Centre celebrates the best in creative and nonfiction writing in Britain today and brings together a wide range of College resources for teaching, learning, and enrichment in creative and academic writing.

We are pleased to announce that the winning students are:

  • Fran Brosan with Drip Feed for the Florence Staniforth Student Fiction prize
  • Rose Amey with The Energy Transition: A call for inappropriate action (UG) and Elliott Miller with Achieving collaborative, systems-thinking leadership in UK nature conservation (PG) for the Environmental Essay prize
  • Maddie Caso with The Disease and my time indoors for the Stott Alternative Futures Prize

Congratulations to the winners, and to all the students who entered the prizes. The judges were all impressed with the quality and range of topics covered.

Fellow Dr Chris Macdonald says, “In addition to the Student Fiction Prize, we launched two new writing prizes this year as the Lucy Cavendish College Writing Centre continues to expand and we were delighted to see a diverse range of creative and thoughtful entries. Congratulations to our winners!”

Dr Alex Freer, Director of the College’s Writing Centre adds, “It's been a real pleasure to read such a wide range of student writing this year, spanning scientific and social scientific writing, essays and fiction. Entries have come from students in a wide range of disciplines and degree courses, which speaks to the interdisciplinary and far-reaching nature of the writing we hope to foster at Lucy”

The winners of the student prizes were awarded at tonight's main Fiction Prize ceremony. Read about the 2023 Fiction Prize's winner here.
