Law graduate Georgia Fearn awarded fellowship for elite journalism programme at NYU.

We’re delighted to announce that Georgia Fearn, one of our alumnae was awarded the prestigious Marjorie Deane Fellowship to pursue an MA degree in journalism on the Business and Economic Reporting (BER) programme at New York University. In combination with a departmental scholarship granted to her, the fellowship supports aspiring financial and economic journalists and covers full tuition and offers a living stipend.

The fellowship was founded by Marjorie Deane in 1998. She was a financial journalist who worked at the Economist. Over the years it has grown to become a highly competitive award, and is designed to support rigorous training in business journalism at the graduate level.

Georgia’s success shows how the Tripos law degree can be a stepping stone for diverse careers. Upon winning the award, Georgia said that her “long-term goal of making complex legal/economic issues accessible” is what propelled her to apply for this Fellowship. She spoke to us about the selection process, which involved a written application, interviews, and the submission of writing samples. She reflected on how much her legal training helped her in honing her writing skills. She explained that outside the academic curriculum, hosting and interviewing personalities like Theresa May, Robert De Niro, and Mathew Rosengart for Cambridge Union helped demonstrate her talent for journalistic pursuits.

Hailing from a working class background in Wales, Georgia was the first in her family to go to university. “Her path was riddled with challenges, but the way she bravely overcame so many challenges to get here speaks of her tenacity and passion for her chosen path. I’m so very proud of Georgia and wish her every success”, said Dr Poorna Mysoor, her Director of Studies.
