Who we are

Lucy Cavendish is a modern College of the University of Cambridge. Previously a College for mature-age (21+) women, students of all genders can now apply to study here and we welcome both standard age (18+) and mature applicants. We offer all subjects available at Cambridge at both standard and affiliate entry. We accept students from all backgrounds.

We admit around 135 undergraduate students every year. We are located just outside the main city center ring-road, no more than 5-10 minutes walk or cycle from all the departments, faculties and utilities you need.

Our community is truly global, with students from over 60 countries represented across the College. We pride ourselves in having one of the most socioeconomically diverse student communities in Cambridge and we are uniquely committed to widening participation at Cambridge. We are a College that feels a bit different from the rest - come and find out more!

Our president, Madeleine Atkins, welcomes you to our Virtual Open Days, and explains how Lucy Cavendish College stands out from all other Colleges in Cambridge.

Lucy Cavendish College will be your home while you’re studying at Cambridge and during your time with us we will support you every step of the way.

"I applied to Lucy for the great location and friendly atmosphere, and particularly love it for the supportive staff, range of work spaces and passion for the local environment. I'd also recommend it for some of the best College veg/vegan food I've come across and for the pretty grounds!"

Meet our staff and hear from them about our welcoming, inclusive and supportive community.

You will find many opportunities to discuss your work, collaborate with other students, improve your academic and personal skills and grow your networks. The shared goals of tackling 21st Century challenges and having a positive impact on society – through your academic work and beyond – draws our community together across all the courses and research programmes.

What we stand for

Diversity, widening participation and social mobility are at the heart of our everything we do. We seek to make a positive change to the world in which we live.

As a former College for mature women, we understand that academic potential manifests itself in diverse ways. We have decades of experience of identifying academic potential in prospective applicants from non-traditional backgrounds and supporting these students to achieve their full potential once at the University.

Under our new admissions policy, people from every background will meet, mix and share ideas. We are particularly interested to identify and admit students who share our values and wish to make a positive contribution to society and to use their careers to tackle the problems the world faces.

We are a driving force for change - come and join our modern and forwarding thinking College.

Our Admissions Policy

We are proud to take a bold stance on widening participation in admissions. We have three specific targets:

1. To admit a majority of our students from underrepresented or disadvantaged backgrounds

2. To have a student population that is representative of UK society by 2025

3. To increase our number of international students from underrepresented countries

For academically outstanding students seeking an unrivaled education and a community that reflects modern society, Lucy Cavendish offers a unique environment in the heart of the historic university that all can truly call home.

Life @ Lucy

Hear all about what is it like to be at Lucy from our current students Abiola and Signe.

Abiola

Abiola has just finished her first year studying Human Social and Political Sciences. She also plays an important role in College as she is the Student Union's Sports and Welfare Officer.

Signe

Signe comes from Denmark and is a second year  studying Psychological and Behavioural Sciences. Her favourite thing about Lucy Cavendish is the wonderful garden (especially in sunshine) and meeting new Lucians at Elevensies at the library.

How we support you

We will be with you every step of the way. The admissions and outreach team members have a wealth of knowledge and experience and offer help and advice at every stage of a student’s application, wherever they are in the world.

“The community at Lucy is one of the most diverse, inclusive and friendly. I was supported in my academic work and also personally; everyone wants you to succeed and get the most out of Cambridge.  I’ve made friends for life at Lucy!”

Studying at Cambridge can be challenging: the terms are short and fast-paced and the academic standards are high. So we support students throughout their time in the College in lots of different ways.

'Home away from home' - Our accommodation

Our new building for our new community of students

By October 2022 Lucy Cavendish will have a brand building to house our growing student community. The building will provide 72 modern, en-suite study-bedrooms (all with views of our beautiful grounds) as well as informal learning spaces and a large café/bar.

Excitingly, the building has been designed to be as eco-friendly as possible. The building is a ‘passivhaus’, which means its energy use is very low. The Leonard Cheshire Charity have also been consulted so the building is as accessible as possible to our diverse community. Four bedrooms will be fully accessible with carer accommodation alongside.

We are so looking forward to opening these brand new facilities to our new student community. Take a look at the gallery below to see what the building should look like. You can also read the full article about the building here.
