“My primary task during my time at Julian Harrap was to work on the administrative side of architectural practise – i.e., sorting and adding GA (General Arrangement) Drawings and DD (Detail Drawings) into the Project Drawing Register and creating an ‘Issue Sheet’ containing the details of all the drawings pertaining to a project before it goes into the construction stage.

After familiarising myself with Issue Sheets, I was delegated the task of annotating several floor plan drawings of the Royal Academy School – adding notes on where additional care must be taken by contractors to preserve specific historical features of the rooms.

On Monday 10th July, I was incredibly lucky to be shown around the active construction site of the Museum of London at Smithfield Market by Julian Harrap himself. A truly unforgettable experience.

Thanks to being in London, I was able to take this opportunity to also visit several exhibitions relating to the world of architecture.

1. The Serpentine Pavilion at Hyde Park – every year a different prominent international architect designs a temporary pavilion for the Serpentine Gallery. This year the theme was on creating ‘spaces for talking’ and was an incredibly interesting West-African inspired gazebo.

2. Japan House London – a permanent exhibition space for Japanese culture, I was able to see their temporary exhibition on ‘Currents in Japanese Graphic Arts’ showcasing spectacular pieces from the last 50 years.

I am hugely grateful to the Lucy Cavendish for their financial support.”
