Unbleached paper, recycled dispensers, and more: why small changes make a big Impact

Lucy Cavendish College just took several more steps towards being more sustainable. Deborah Curran-Millar, our amazing Housekeeping Manager, has been busy introducing some changes that are good for the environment and good for us:

  • Unbleached paper towels and toilet paper, coming out of dispensers made from recycled Tetra Pak cartons. As the paper is unbleached, it has less harsh chemicals and a smaller impact on the planet. The company that makes them can easily separate the different parts of the Tetra Pak cartons, which are usually hard to recycle.
  • New hand soap dispensers that you fill up with a special sachet that dissolves in water. No more throwing away tiny plastic bottles, because of wasteful single-use plastic soap refills. And the dispensers themselves are made from 100% recycled plastic.
  • The kitchen and new cafe are getting in on the action too. They have introduced dosing dispensers that use concentrated bio cleaning formulas and recyclable packaging. This means less waste, using just the right amount of product every time. Staff and students are also encouraged to get takeaway in their own non-disposable containers for a discounted price.

But why all the fuss about a few dispensers and some unbleached paper? Well, it is all about being more mindful of the environment. Every little bit counts, and Deborah has been leading the change.

"I've always cared about the environment," she says, "and I believe that even small changes can make a big difference. We all need to do our part, and hopefully these new things will inspire everyone to think green!"
