Lucy Cavendish Fellow, Dr Liam Saddington, and University colleagues secured research funding from CATS Future of Therapeutic.

Dr Liam Saddington has secured research funding from CATS Future of Therapeutics for a project in collaboration with teams from across the University including Geography, Psychiatry, Public Health, and Cambridge Zero.

The project has grown from a conference entitled “Environmental Displacement and Migration: Drivers, Impacts, Solutions” held at the University of Cambridge’s Centre for the Study of Global Human Movement in March 2022.

Sea Levels are predicted to continue to rise at an increasing rate due to climate change bringing with it an increased risk of flooding to coastal settlements.

In the UK, coastal communities are at risk from rising sea levels, but it lacks national frameworks to guide climate relocation. How can we engage with communities and policymakers to make difficult decisions around relocation and sea level rise? What considerations should guide these decisions? Without a coherent set of best practice approaches that involve the affected communities and consideration of options and decision-making processes, the UK will be less resilient in adapting to climate change going forward.

This project is using contemporary case studies in the UK to understand and assess the social, political, psychological, and health impacts of climate change adaptation. Initial visits to Wales and elsewhere will serve as a springboard to identify best practices for the UK to manage coastal retreat going forward.
