Jana (Land Economy) has been awarded the prize for her significant contribution to college life

During her undergraduate studies at Lucy, Jana has served first as Vice-President of the Student Union, and then as President, adapting the activities for students to the new COVID-19 standards and adding new flexible schemes to encourage and financially support students to organise their own activities in small groups.

Jana comments: “I am greatly honoured to be awarded the Emmeline Pankhurst Prize for Contribution to College Life.

Being born and raised in the post-socialist country of Slovakia, I believe freedom is a privilege that cannot be taken for granted. Despite the perceived feeling of security, it must be cultivated not to perish. The responsibility to embrace our communities and pass on these values lies on our shoulders.

Emmeline Pankhurst and the legacy of the Suffragette movement not only expanded the right to vote but also promoted proprietary rights, access to education, and the right to participate in political activities for women. We live in unique times where we are fortunate to see an increasing number of inspiring and strong female leaders. Yet, in many parts of the world, women are not being given equal opportunities to excel and live a dignified life.

I am sincerely grateful to be a member of the international community of Lucy Cavendish that is actively building future female makers and shapers. The community helped me to uncover and question my own prejudices. Lucy Cavendish College gives extraordinary individuals the tools to reflect on these issues, to be self-aware, and to contribute to preserving freedom and dignity.”
