On Wednesday 10 May, Cambridge members were hosted at lunch in London by His Majesty the King of Bhutan.

Pema Yangzom (Lucy Cavendish College, MPhil Architecture and Urban Studies), Shara Gyaltshen (St John’s College, MPhil Biological Sciences (Genetics)), and Lucy Cavendish College Deputy Development Director, Tom Hawker-Dawson, met the King at an Oxford Street venue, where Pema, Shara, and the King discussed their studies and ambitions for the future.

Pema said: “The opportunity to dine with His Majesty the King of Bhutan was an honour beyond words and profound experience that I will cherish forever. The occasion provided a unique chance to highlight my research work on affordable housing and witness the King's insightful remarks, wisdom, and genuine interest for the wellbeing of Bhutan and its citizens. This remarkable moment with His Majesty the King will always hold a special place in my heart.”

The College is grateful to the Honorary Consul of The Kingdom of Bhutan to Canada, Sam Blyth, for his support in facilitating the meeting. His Majesty met the Director of the Cambridge Trust, Helen Pennant, later that day, to discuss the Trust’s ongoing partnership with the Kidu Foundation to offer awards for Bhutanese Masters-level students at Cambridge via the Bhutan King's Scholarship at the University of Cambridge. They talked about the importance of scholarships in helping Bhutanese students gain expertise and knowledge necessary for the future development of Bhutan.

Helen Pennant said: “The Kidu Foundation is one of the Cambridge Trust’s most valued partners. It was an honour to meet His Majesty and to learn of his support for Bhutanese students at Cambridge. I hope many more will apply to come to Cambridge in future.”
