Four of Cambridge’s top bands will battle it out for a set at the Cambridge Club Festival.

Wynn Tasker is a Human, Social and Political Sciences undergraduate student at Lucy.

He has reached the final round of the Centre for Music Performance’s new band competition Take it to the Bridge, a competition designed to showcase some of the best bands in the University. Earlier rounds of the competition have involved 15 student bands made up of over 60 students.

Wynn’s band is called Temor and it was established in October 2021. Since then, their piano player has changed but the other members have remained the same. The band started as a way to meet and jam, mainly jazz, but since has developed fast: they have been composing their own tunes and have some music videos and recordings in the works.

“We entered the competition to try and secure a spot in playing on a larger stage. Playing at the same venues in Cambridge can get repetitive and we are looking at a chance to reach a wider audience as we develop our sound and identity”, says Wynn.

“It's a really great feeling, and I can't thank all those that have come to our gigs and obviously the Centre of Music Performance enough for making this happen. To have a chance to play at any festival is always a big deal since you get loads of exposure, and is a big chance seeing as competition in the UK music scene is so cutthroat. As a band, this would come at a perfect time, offering a chance for us to establish our image and musical identity to a wider public at a period where we are progressing rapidly artistically and are looking for bigger opportunities to showcase all that we have been working on.”

Wynn has been playing music regularly since he was four years old, since he has been lucky enough to come from quite a musical family.

“Being able to play allows you to express yourself in another language, which is definitely priceless. In general, music has probably genuinely had the most positive impact on my life out of everything, for example in helping me to recognise subtle and intricate beauty in things. This can offer a release from stressful, regimented Cambridge life, allowing you to put things in perspective too and see beyond the everyday mundane.”

The final, taking place at Hidden Rooms in Jesus Lane, Sunday 23 April, will see four outstanding bands made up of 18 musicians from nine colleges competing for the chance to play at this summer’s Cambridge Club Festival, where Lionel Richie and Grace Jones will be headlining.
