The prizes span different disciplines and are open to all Lucy students. Winners will scoop £100 prizes.

Writing is central to the College's history and its mission today. Together with the prestigious Lucy Cavendish Fiction Prize, the College runs several writing prizes for its own students, under its Writing Centre umbrella.

The Lucy Cavendish College Writing Centre celebrates the best in creative and nonfiction writing in Britain today and brings together a wide range of College resources for teaching, learning, and enrichment in creative and academic writing.

The Florence Staniforth Student Fiction Prize

Funded by the Florence Staniforth Award for Excellence in Creative Writing, the prize is for students from any discipline studying at Lucy Cavendish College. Students are invited to submit a short story, with a word limit of 4000 words. Details here.

The Environmental Essay Prize

Lucy Cavendish students from all subjects are eligible and environment is broadly defined to include scientific, social scientific and humanities work on climate and ecology of any region or historical period and in relation to any social group. Essays should be original work of not more than 2000 words. Details here.

The Stott Alternative Futures Prize

The Stott Alternative Futures Prize is open to all current Lucy Cavendish students in any discipline and understands speculative fiction very broadly to be any creative or imaginative writing interested in possible futures.This could well, but does not have to, take the form of a short story or extract from a longer piece of fictional prose, with an upper limit of 2000 words. The Research Blog Competition

The comms team organises a research blog competition for all students. This is a great opportunity to spread the word about their research. Research blogs can include undergraduates’ projects (perhaps for a dissertation, or a summer research project) as well as research projects conducted by graduate students, with a limit of 500-words. The Student Writing Prizes are free to enter and open to all Lucy students. The deadline to enter is Friday 15th March 2024.

Winners will be awarded £100 prizes at the main Fiction Prize ceremony in May.
