We are proud to announce renewed support for 25 students in 2020/21 thanks to our ongoing partnership with Santander Universities
Lucy Cavendish College is one of only 4 Cambridge colleges supported by Santander, through Santander Universities. Every year approximately 25 students from under-represented backgrounds, either undergraduates or graduates, receive scholarships of up to £1000, to help them with living costs or support them in their first international experience through the Santander Universities widening access bursary and mobility fund.
Santander Universities mission is to support students across 3 key areas: education, entrepreneurship and employability. Santander Universities has spent more than a decade collaborating with a large network of university partners to remove barriers to higher education for students whose ambitions aren’t always matched by their means.
Thanks to this partnership we saw numerous students achieving success here at Lucy Cavendish, one of many being Marta Beneda (PhD, Psychology). She studies factors affecting the development of sex differences in infancy and has presented her research at conferences in the UK, US, Russia, Poland and Australia. Marta supports the graduate community at her Department where she is a graduate student representative. For the last four years she has been engaged in volunteering work with vulnerable children in the Cambridge area. During her studies, Marta received the prestigious University of Cambridge Vice-Chancellor’s Award and won the Kate Bertram Prize(s) for First Class Results in non-Tripos exams in 17/18.
Ashling Williams (Human, Social & Political Sciences), one of last year’s recipients commented:
“Having the financial support from Lucy Cavendish, through the Santander bursary, made my first year a university so much easier. It gave me the financial help that I needed to support myself and enabled a stress-free experience. I am extremely grateful for such generous assistance.”
Another recipient of the Santander scholarship, Ruby Pillai (MSt in Entrepreneurship), said: “I am thankful for Santander’s generous bursary which I received last year. It helped me significantly with my travel, accommodation and other expenses. As a startup founder who is working full-time on my entrepreneurial venture and as a mother of a young daughter, every bit of support and help is hugely valuable. By awarding me the bursary, Lucy Cavendish College helped me in lightning up my financial burden, which allowed me to focus more on my startup and academic learning. The generosity has inspired me to help others and give back to the community. I hope one day I will be able to help students at Lucy Cavendish College to achieve their goals just as I have been supported.”
