The exciting new collection is the first of its kind at the University of Cambridge

On 3 July 2023, supporters of the collection and academic groups studying comics gathered at a drinks reception in Lucy's library to celebrate the official launch of our graphic novels collection.

The collection, spearheaded by Lucy Fellow Dr Joe Sutliff Sanders, personally designed the initial list of texts, specifically seeking books currently available in English and ensuring that women writers and people of colour are included right from the foundation of the collection.

Dr Sutliff Sanders said:

"It was an incredible event, leveraging an international gathering of two of the largest academic groups studying comics to draw global attention to the first graphic novels library in the University of Cambridge system. These researchers from around the world, who are using comics to increase literacy, give patients in palliative care a better way to express themselves, provide community for queer creators and readers, and give their student joyous encounters with big ideas, will go back to their home countries seeing that Lucy is the place where groundbreaking work is happening."

The collection, endorsed by Neil Gaiman, and Bryan and Mary Talbot, will continue to grow in stages over the years and will be added to annually.
